Describe the Cone of Fire
Each round fired in a burst from the same weapon has a slightly different trajectory.
The pattern these rounds create on way to the target is the Cone of Fire
What is the Beaten Zone
The Beaten Zone is the elliptical pattern formed when rounds within the Cone of Fire strike the ground or target and is the Primary way of adjusting fire.
85% of the rounds fall is considered effective Beaten Zone
What is Danger Space
Space between the machine gun and the target where trajectory rises less that 1.8m above the ground.
What are the three Classes of Fire
Respect to the Ground
Respect to the Target
Respect to the Weapon
What are the two subcategories of Respect to the Ground
Grazing Fire: When the center of the cone of fire is less than 1m above the ground.
Plunging Fire: When Danger Space is within the Beaten Zone
What are the six subcategories to Respect to the Weapon
Fixed Traversing Fire Searching Fire Traversing and Searching Fire Swinging Traverse Free Gun
What are the four subcategories to Respect to the Target
Frontal Fire
Flanking Fire
Oblique Fire
Enfilade Fire
What are the appropriate fires for respective targets
Point Targets - Fixed Area Targets - Traversing and Searching Linear Targets - Traversing Fire Deep Targets - Searching Fire Linear Target with Depth - Traversing and Searching
What is Overhead fires
Only delivered from Tripod or Vehicle using T&E and friendlies between 350-850m
What is a Defilade Position
When MG and Crew are completely masked by terrain from the enemy. Observer Controls fire from Defilade
What are the six Methods of Fire Control
Prearranged Signals Range Cards Personal Contact Verbal Hand/Arm Signal SOP's
What are the six Fire Commands
Alert Direction Description Range Method of Fire Command to fire
What are the Principles of Machine Gun Employment
Mutual Support Coordination Interlocking Fire Sited in Defilade Sited to Produce Enfilade Fire Cover and Concealment Economy of Ammunition
What are the Sustained rates of Fire for M249, M-60, & M240B
M249: 50 RNDs/MIN, 3-5 RND burst
M60/240B: 100 RND/MIN, 6-9 RND burst
Barrel change every 10 minute
What are the Rapid rates of Fire for M249, M-60, & M240B
M249: 100 RNDs/MIN, 6-8 RND burst
M60/240B: 200 RND/MIN, 10-12 RND burst
Barrel change every 2 minute
What are the Cyclic rates of Fire for M249, M-60, & M240B
M249: 850 RNDs/MIN
M60: 550 RND/MIN
240B: 650-950RND/MIN
Barrel change every 1 minute
What is the DA Form for a Range Card
DA Form 5517
x2 Copies
What is Final Protective Fire (FPF)
An immediate prearranged barrier of fire to stop enemy movement across defense lines or areas
What is Final Protective Line (FPL)
Predetermined line along which grazing fire is placed to stop enemy assault.
Fixed in direction and elevation.
Grazing fire over various types of terrain out to 600m.
To prevent enemy from crawling under Grazing fire, search toward by lowering the muzzle.
What is Dead Space
Any fold or depression in the ground that prevents a target from being engaged from a Fixed position
Firing Position/Table
Firing table should be 4-6 inches down with the barrel as close to the ground as possible
What is the highest unit level on a Ranger Card (DA Form 5517)
Company
Where do you put your Machine Gun in an L-Shaped Ambush
At the apex/dog leg of the L-Shaped Ambush using Searching Fire
Most desirable type of fire in respect to the Target
Enfilade Fire
What is the #1 priority target
Anything that can’t destroy your weapon
What is the best way to Adjust Fire
The Beaten Zone, Followed by Tracer Rounds
What is Plunging Fire
Occurs when Danger Space is within the Beaten Zone
At longer ranges when firing from high ground to low ground
When firing into abruptly rising ground or across uneven terrain.
Principle Direction of Fire (PDF)
PDF is assigned to cover an area that has good fields of fire or has a likely avenue of approach.
only used is FPL is not assigned, then becomes part of unit’s FPF
When moving from Primary fighting position to Secondary fighting position -
Leave the Tripod, take ammo and other means to fire machine gun
What is Grazing Fire
Occurs when the center of the Cone of Fire rises less than 1m off the ground out to 600m
