knots and harnesses Flashcards
What is safe working load of GP line?
450kg
What is the diameter of GP line?
12mm
What is the melting point of GP line?
250oc
What is GP line made of
polyester
What is the SWL of kermantle rope
272kg
what is kermantle rope made of?
nylon polyester
what is the diamter and colour of kermantle rope
orange/blue . 13mm
What is the best way to clean rope line?
Rope line can be cleaned after use by soaking and agitating in container of warm water
Name 4 ways a rope line can be damaged? I.e What is CAMSUE?
Chemicals
Abrasions
Mechanical damage
Shock load
Uv light
Extreme heat
2 external signs of rope damage?
cuts or broken strands, excessive abrasion
2 internal signs of rope damage?
: fine powder, broken fibres
What is TRUSS?
T- easy to tie
R- easy to recognise
U- easy to untie
S- wont damage the strength of the ropeline
S- wont slip
What are 6 GP knots?
Clove hitch, overhand knot, half hitch, round turn with 2 half hitches , rolling hitch, double sheet bend, bowline
what are the 7 components of a karabiner?
- Well, major axis, gate, locking sleeve, kinge, minor axis, latch
name 5 components of harness attachment
sternal attachment
ventral attachment
chest harness
adjustable shoulder straps
karabiner
waist belt
What are the following knots used for?
Clove hitch
Rolling hitch
round turn w 2 HH
-Clove hitch- used for securing small gear + end of rope line
-rolling hitch- variation of clove hitch,it will not slip in the direction where double turn was applied
round turn with 2 half hitches- securing a line to any round object, easy to untie , knot does not jam under heavy weight
What are the following knots used for?
overhand knot
half hitch
bowline
double sheet bend
-overhand knot- Used to prevent a line from unreeving through a pulley
-half hitch- used to secure knots, prevent them from unravelling
-bowline- used to raise or lower objects, tightens under load and is easy to untie
-double sheet bend - used to join ropes of diff thicknesses. Thicker rope forms the bite
What are LRL kermantle rope specs?
-consists of a nylon core and a polyeseter sheath, elongates under load.
-13mm diameter
-270kg working load limit, one person per line
-220 oc melting point
-elongation- 3% at 80kg
What is knot protocol?
-ensure the correct knot is used for the job
-place tension on the line to tighten the knot
-all knots must be released from line after use
-all knots must be inspected after tying. look away and re check
-If its LRL, another FF needs to check
-ALl knots have no less than 150 mm tail
What are the 5 life rescue knots? what are their uses?
-double fishermans- used to connect lines of equal diamter to form a strong non slip join without loss of strength
-figure 8 stopper- forms the basis of all figure 8 family of knots. Can be used in the running end as a stopper to prevent objects coming off line
-figure 8 on the bite- creates a non slip loop that can be attached to a karabiner /top d of a safety harness
-figure 8 re thread- used to connect a line to an object where a loop cannot be thrown over to secure the end of a line
-alpine butterfly- designed for 3 way loading from standing, running end and loop of the knot. Used as a midline attachment point . Can be used to isolate a damaged piece of rope
