Knee Joint Flashcards
What is the Origin of the Sartorius Muscle?
- Anterosuperior Iliac Spine
- Superior Half of the notch just distal to the spine
What is the Insertion of the Sartorius Muscle?
- Proximal Medial surface of Tibia
What does the Sartorius Perform?
- Knee Flexion
- Knee Internal Rotation
What is the Gracilis Origin?
- Anteromedial Ramus of Pubis
What is the Gracilis Insertion?
-Anteromedial Surface of the Tibia
What does the Gracilis Perform?
- Knee Flexion
- Knee Internal Rotation
What is the Origin of the Rectus Femoris?
- Anteroinferior Iliac Spine (Straight Head)
- Groove above rim of Acetabulum (Reflected Head)
What is the Insertion of the Rectus Femoris?
- Patellar Ligament to Tibial Tuberosity
What does the Rectus Femoris Perform?
- Knee Extension
What is the Origin of the Semitendinosus?
- Ischial Tuberosity
What is the Insertion of the Semitendinosus?
- Proximal Medial Tibia
- Deep fascia of the Leg
what does the Semitendinosus Perform?
- Knee Flexion
- Knee Internal Rotation
What is the Semimembranosis Orign?
- Ischial Tuberosity
What is the Semimembranosus Insertion?
- Postmedial aspect of the tibial medial condyle
What does the semimembranosus perform?
- Knee Flexion
- Knee Internal Rotation
What is the Origin of the Biceps Femoris?
- Sacrotuberous Ligament
- Ischial Tuberosity
- Linea Aspera
- Lateral Supracondylar Line
What is the Insertion of the Biceps Femoris?
- Lateral Side of head of Fibula
- Lateral Condyle of Tibia
What does the biceps femoris do?
- Flex Knee
- Externally Rotate Knee
What is the Origin of the Popliteus?
- Posterior Lateral femoral condyle
What is the insertion of the popliteus?
- Upper posterior medial surface of tibia
What does the Popliteus do?
- Knee Flexion
- Knee Internal Rotation
- unlocks extended Knee
What is the origin of the gastrocnemius?
- Posterior Medial Femoral Condyle (Medial head)
- Posterior Lateral Femoral Condyle (Lateral Head)
What is the Insertion of the Gastrocnemius?
- Posterior Calcaneus through achilles tendon
What does the gastrocnemius do?
- Plantar Flex ankle Joint
- Flex Knee joint
What is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament responsible for?
- Preventing anterior movement of the tibia relative to the femurs position and medial rotation
What is the Posterior Cruciate Ligament responsible for?
- Preventing posterior movement of the tibia relative to the femurs position
What is the Medial Collateral Ligament responsible for?
- Preventing the knee from abducting
What is the lateral collateral ligament responsible for?
- Preventing the knee from adducting
How do menisci get injured?
- squatting, twisting, or direct contact
Where do the Vastus Intermedius, Medialis, and Lateralis Insert?
- Patella
- Tibial Tuberosity through Patellar Tendon
List the Knee Flexors
Sartorius, Gracilis, Semitendinosus, Semimembranosus, Biceps Femoris, Popliteus, Gastrocnemius
List the Knee Extensors
Rectus Femoris, Vastus Lateralis, Vastus Medialis, Vastus Intermedius
List the Knee Internal Rotators
Sartorius, Gracilis, Semitendinosus, Semimembranosus, Popliteus
List the Knee External Rotators
Biceps Femoris
How does the popliteus help with knee flexion?
It unlocks an extended knee by performing internal rotation (med to lat) and flexion
Why is our MCL larger than our LCL?
- There are more compressive forces on the medial leg due to how we often stand. Gravity tries to force abduction.
