Knee flexor muscles Flashcards
State the action and nerve supply of sartorius
Medial rotates and flexes the knee.
Femoral nerve L2,3
What are the muscle attachments of sartorius?
Origin: ASIS
Insertion: anterior surface of tibia just inferomedial to tibial tuberosity
State the action and nerve supply of gracilis
Medial rotation and knee flexion
Obturator nerve L3,4
What are the muscle attachments of gracilis?
Origin: ext surface body of pubis, inferior pubic ramus, ramus of ischium
Insertion: medial surface, proximal shaft of tibia
What are the functions and nerve supply of gastrocnemius?
Knee flexion and ankle plantarflexion.
Tibial nerve S1,2
State the origin and insertion of gastrocnemius
Origin: 2 heads- medial and lateral heads from medial and lateral femoral condyles
Insertion: Achilles’ tendon into posterior-superior calcaneous
State the muscle attachments of plantaris
Origin: lateral supracondylar line above lateral head of gastrocnemius
Insertion: medial border of TA and post surface of calcaneous
What is the action and nerve supply of plantaris?
Weak knee flexor and plantar flexor of foot
Tibial nerve L4,5, S1
Name and describe the only muscle associated with the knee. State its muscle attachments.
Popliteus is a small flat, deep, posterior muscle thar forms part of the floor of the popliteal fossa.
It originates from the proximal surface of the posterior tibia and is inserted in the proximal surface of posterior tibia.
What is the function and nerve supply of popliteus?
It unlocks the extended knee by laterally rotating the femur on fixed tibia, rotates the knee medially, and flexes the knee.
Tibial nerve L4, 5, S1
State the muscle attachments of Tensor fascia Latea
Origin: ASIS and outer iliac crest to iliac tubercle
Insertion: anterior surface of tibia just inferolateral to tibial tuberosity (Gerdy’s tubercle)
What is the function and nerve supply of TFL?
It stabilises the knee laterally.
Femoral nerve L2,3,4
