Knee ExM Flashcards
Varus stress test
Perform at 0 and 30 degrees
Assesses integrity of LCL
Valgus stress test
Perform at 0 and 30 degrees
Assesses integrity of MCL
Lachmans test
Determine integrity of ACL
Supine knee 20-30 degrees flexion
Anterior drawer test
Determine integrity of the ACL
Examiner tries to displace tibia anteriorly while foot remains on table
Posterior drawer test
Determines integrity of PCL
Examiner puts both hands behind tibia and thumbs on tibial plateau in order to palpate tibia-femur step off
Posterior sag (Godfrey) sign test
Assesses the integrity of PCL
Pt lies supine with hips flexed at 45 and knees flexed to 90 and legs resting on examiners arms
Pivot shift test (lateral pivot shift test)
Assesses anterolateral instability
Knee flexed 20-30 degrees
Torque placed on tibia while rotating it internally and applying valgus stress
McMurray Test
Determines integrity of meniscus, diagnose a meniscus tear
Fully flex knee holding foot by the heel
Rotate leg on thigh while still holding in full flexion
Bring leg into right angle and rotate internal and externally
Medial tibial rotation=testing lateral meniscus
Lateral tibial rotation= testing medial meniscus
Apley’s compression test
Diagnose meniscus tear Grab one foot in each hand with heels together and flex knees to limit Rotate heels outward and extend knee Put leg on back of thigh Knee bent to right angle Rotate Push down to compress Rotate again
Apley’s distraction test
Should relieve pan caused by apleys compression test
Grab one foot in each hand with heels together and fully flex knees
Then grab one foot in each hand with toes together and fully extend
Place knee on back of thigh
Grab foot with knee at 90
Pull leg up to distract
Externally rotate
Thessaly test
Diagnose meniscus tear
Stand holding hands with pt as they stand on one leg and rotate side to side first with knee flexed 5 and then knee flexed 20
Clarke’s test
PFPS
Hand web superior to patella
Pt contacts muscle while examiner applies downward and inferior pressure on patella
