Knee Flashcards
role of the ACL
prevents abnormal internal rotation of the tibia
role of the PCL
prevents hyperextension and anterior translocation of the femur
role of the MCL
resists valgus force
LCL
resists varus force
How do you test the ACL?
asses anterior translation of the tibia
How do you test the PCL?
asses posterior translation of the tibia
How many articulations at knee?
2: tibiofemoral and patellofemoral
What may predispose to early OA in knee?
meniscal tears, ligament injuries, malalignment (gnu varum etc)
Examples of malalignment and OA
Genu varum: Medial OA
Genu Valgus: Lateral OA
How can young PT’s with medial OA be treated?
Osteotomy of proximal tibia to shift load to lateral compartment especially for heavy load workers as knee replacements would fail but less predictable
Management of OA in knee
1) Conservative
2) when pain gets so bad and disabling can get a total knee replacement, unicompartmental knee replacement or patellofemoral replacement
