● Can be traced through learning a person’s descent
CONSANGUINEAL KINSHIP
descent through paternal and
maternal ancestors
Bilateral Descent
only one lineage
Unilateral Descent
follows the father’s lineage
Patrilineal Descent
follows the mother’s lineage
Matrilineal Descent
follows either or both the
maternal or paternal sides
Ambilineal Descent
● Bond between a husband and wife and with their
families (e.g. Balae and Bayaw)
● Caused by marriage.

a legal contract between two people
committing themselves in a permanent

Endogamy
marriage of two people
coming from different groups or
categories.

marriage.

court decree that terminates or dissolves a
marriage. They individuals are given back their single status and may marry again.
Divorce
Nullifying a marriage. Differs from divorce in the sense that it nullifies a marriage completely as if it never existed however, must have valid grounds
Annulment
separation of a married husband and
wife.
Legal Separation
● Personal kinship that is based on neither
consanguineal nor affinal ties.
● May occur in several instances such as adoption
and religious rituals
