Kingdom Eubacteria Flashcards
1
Q
Cell shape
A
3 possible shapes:
- Cocci/coccus (spherical)
- Bacilli/bacillus (rod-like)
- Spirillium (spiral)
2
Q
Mono
A
one
3
Q
Diplo
A
two
4
Q
Strepo
A
Many in a chain/line
5
Q
Staphylo
A
Many in a cluster
6
Q
Spirillium
A
spiral shape
7
Q
Movement patterns
A
- 50% of bacteria lack structures for movement
- Some use flagella (wiplike structures) to propel themselves
- Spiral-shaped bacteria use a corkscrew motion to move, others glide on mucous
- Some can only move passively because they have the ability to float on liquid particles or air
8
Q
Classification by how they obtain nutrition: Chemoheterotrophs
A
- Feed on organic or inorganic molecules by using chemical reaction
- Live in dark, extreme environments
9
Q
Classification by how they obtain nutrition: Photoheterotrophs
A
- Use light and also feed on organic molecules
- Live usually in sunny environments
10
Q
Classification by how they obtain nutrition: Photoautotrophs
A
- Use sunlight to make CO2 into carbon compounds like sugar
- Live in sunny environments
11
Q
Classification by how they obtain nutrition: heterotrophs
A
- Feed on organic molecules
- ubiquitous
- More likely to infect you
12
Q
Respiration method
A
- Obligate aerobes: bacteria which MUST live in oxygen
- Obligate anaerobes: MUST NOT live in oxygen
- Facultative aerobes: can live in both situations
13
Q
How do bacteria reproduce?
A
- they reproduce using 5 different methods
- We have to know:
1. Binary fission
2. Conjugation
3. Dormant State Endospore
14
Q
Binary fission
A
- Most common type of bacterial reproduction (asexual)
1. Starts with original mother cell
2. DNA replicates for cell division
3. DNA doubles then divides itself
4. 2 identical daughter cells
15
Q
Conjugation (sticking two things together)
A
- two bacteria join temporarily using pilus(mating bridge)
- small circular piece of DNA (plasmid) goes from the donor to the recipient cell.
- allows for genetic variation
