King Lear ( Act 2 Scene 4 ) Flashcards
Incredulous hyperbole
He cannot believe the disrespect
He thinks they love him but they resent him
“They durst not do’t They could not , Would not do’t tis worse than murder “
Fool advises kent and highlights to kent Lears future foreshadowing
“Let go thy hold when a great wheel runs down a hill lest it break they neck with following it “
Incredulous behaviour he cannot believe they would do such a thing he believes they are sick but he actually is
“Deny to speak to me ! They are sick! They are weary . Mere fetches “
A reflective moment Lear begins to see a turning point in his hubris
“When nature , being oppressd , commands the mind to suffer with the body “
A malicious and almost nonchalant attack on lears ego she knows he is weak and asserts power over him and gains enjoyment from it
“O sir! You are old ; you should be ruled and led “
Symbolic of lears position of power now he asks if Reagan wants him on his knees but yes that is what she wants it is parallel to his love test
“On my knees I beg “
A moment of insight
“A man’s life is cheap as beasts “
