Kinetics (I and II) Flashcards
How does increase in concentration affect rate of reaction?
High conc= more particles in a particular volume
Increases the frequency of successful collisions per second
How does increase in surface area increase rate of the reaction?
Larger surface area means more reactants can attach and react to the surface
X and Y axis of MaxWell Boltzmann graph
X axis- energy
Y axis- fraction of molecules with energy, E
Define steric hinderance
Where atoms are too large and they prevent attaching molecules by getting in the way
Define activation energy
Min energy needed for particles to collide in order for them to react together
Define collision theory
In order for two reactants with each other they must have enough energy and must react with correct orientation
Define rate of reaction
Change in concentration of reactant or product divided by Change in time
why would some reactants be added in excess
so their concertation would remain constant so only the concertation of one reactant would vary
why would the volumes need to remain the same
as the concentrations is proportional to volume
how to determine whether a kinetic mechanism is correct?
state if the reagents in the rate equation are in the rate determining step
if they are, state if a reagent which is zero order is involved before or after the rate determining step
