kinetics - chem AP Flashcards
Rate Determining Step
the slowest step, it limits the overall rate. the most difficult part for the molecules to collide
Chemical reaction involve
the conversion of reactants with particular set of properties into products with a whole new set of properties
chemical kinetics
investigation of the rate at which reactions occur and the factors that affect them
factors that affect reaction rate
surface area, temperature, concentration, catalyst and the nature of the reactants
how does surface area affect reaction rate ?
the greater the surface area, the faster the reaction is produced since the reactant is more exposed and can collide easier and more efficient. increasing the surface area of a solid will increase the rate of a heterogeneous reaction.
how does concentration and pressure affect the reaction rate ?
As the concentration is increasing, more particles are present giving the molecules more opportunities to collide with each other. The more pressure, the closer the molecules meaning increase in the rate of chemical reactions.
how does temperature affect the reaction rate ?
Temperature and kinetic energy are directly proportional to each other, as temperature increases so does the kinetic energy. A raise in the energy means faster moving particles which leads to them colliding more often
What is a catalyst
substances which increase the rates of chemical reactions without being used up. They work by providing a different pathway for the reaction to occur to speed up the process
inhibitor
species that reduces the rate of a chemical reaction by combining with a reactant to stop it from reacting its usual way.
