Kinetics Flashcards
What is velocity?
Both speed and direction.
Speed is only how fast something is travelling
What is the formula for average velocity?
Average velocity = distance / time
Av = d/t
What is the formula for acceleration?
Final velocity - original velocity / time
A= v - u/t
How do you find out the distance travelled if you know the initial and final velocities?
Distance = (initial velocity + final velocity / 2) x time taken
S = u+v/2 x t
How to calculate the final speed of a travelling object?
Final speed = initial speed + (acceleration x time taken)
V = u + at
How do you find out the distance travelled if you have an acceleration figure?
Distance travelled = (initial velocity x time taken) + 1/2at squared
S= ut + 1/2at squared
How do you find out the final velocity with an acceleration figure?
V squared = u squared + 2as
What is Newton’s first law?
Law of inertia.
Objects at rest stay in rest and objects in motion stay in motion with the same speed and direction.
What is Newton’s second law?
When a force acts on a body the rate of momentum is proportional to the applied force.
What is the formula for weight?
Mass x gravity
What is the formula for momentum?
Momentum = mass x velocity
What is elastic and inelastic collision?
elastic = Kinetic energy is conserved.
Inelastic = kinetic energy is not conserved (kinetic energy lost)
What is the change of momentum known as?
Impulse of the force.
Final momentum - initial momentum
What is the formula for impulse?
Impulse = force x time
What is Newton’s third law ?
Law of motion.
To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
