Kinetic particle theory Flashcards
What are the factors that affect the pressure of a substance?
Mass of molecules, volume of molecules and temperature
How does the mass of particles increases pressure ?
The mass of particles increases the number of molecules per unit area, which increases the number of collisions against the wall per unit time. The total amount of force acting perpendicularly acting on the wall by the molecules increases per unit area, Hence, the pressure increases.
How does decreasing the volume affect the pressure ?
Decreasing the volume increases the number of molecules per unit volume which increases the number of collisions against the wall per unit time , the total force acting by the molecules acting perpendicularly to the wall per unit area increases. Hence, pressure increases.
How does temperature increase the pressure ?
When temperature increases, the average kinetic energy of the molecules increases, and the number of collisions between the molecules and the wall increases per unit time. Hence, the magnitude of the force of the molecules acting on the wall increases. Hence the sum of forces acting perpendicularly on the wall per unit area decreases. Hence pressure increases
