Q

Evaporation VS Boiling

A

Evaporation: Occurs only at surface of liquid, occurs at and below boiling point

Boiling: Occurs throughout liquid, occurs only at boiling point

Q

Describe the heating curve

A

A-B: Temperature rises, particles in solid state takes in heat, kinetic energy increases, particles vibrate faster in fixed positions
B-C: Temperature remains constant, particles gain enough energy to overcome the forces of attraction between particles, temperature constant as energy used for breaking forces of attraction, particles move about, solid to liquid
C-D: Temp rises, particles in liquid state takes in heat, kinetic energy increases, particles move about faster
D-E: Temp remains constant, particles gain enough energy to overcome the forces of attraction between particles, temp is constant as energy used for breaking forces of attraction, particles escape from liquid into surroundings, becomes a gas
E-F: Temp continues to increase as particles gain more heat and kinetic energy to move at higher speeds in all directions
