Kinetic particle theory Flashcards
The kinetic particle theory of matter
Matter consists of small particles called molecules.
The molecules are always in random motion.
The molecules attract one another with a force which decreases as the distance between them increases.
Describe the properties of particles in solids, liquids, and gasses from kinetic particel theory of matter
Solids - molecules close packed together slightly moving. definite shape and volume
liquids - far apart and moving past each other - fill their container
Gases- Very spread apart moving at high speed colliding - completely fill their container
Melting
solid turns into a liquid.
Condensation
gas turns into a liquid.
Evaporation
liquid turns into a gas.
Sublimation
solid turns into a gas.
Freezing
liquid turns into a solid.
Deposition
Gas turns into a solid.
link uses of a material to its properties
Thermal
Thermal conductivity is a substances ability to transfer heat.
Nichrome allows rapid heat transfer so used in hairdryers and toasters.

boiling point
link uses of a material to its properties
elect
ability of a material to conduct an electrical charge is called electrical conducivitu
copper wire
Boiling
temp at which a liquid becomes a gas
sodium gets uses a coolant in power stations as it has a high boiling point so it can withstand the temp as it absorbs heat transferring it to a generator.
Melting
when a solid becomes liquid
tin, lead, zinc get used as wires for elect fuses so when a high temp heats teh wire it melts preventing the high temp from damaging the device and causing a dire.
