Acids and bases Flashcards
Acids taste
sour
Acids are
Proton doners
Acids produce what ions when added to water
Hydrogen ions
A substance can be tested to find if it is an acid
or a base using an
Indicator
Indicators are
Methyl orange
Litmus
Phenol phthalein
Bromothymol Blue
Methyl orange
pink/ orange = acid
yellow/orange = base
Phenol phthalein
colourless = acid
Pink/red = base
Bromothymol blue
Yellow/orange = acid
blue = base
Litmus
red = acid
Blue/purple = base
When acid donates a proton the species formed is called a
conjugate base
e.g. HA = ACID
HA –> H+ + A-
A- = Conjugate base
what are the products of a proton transfer reaction
you get got products with acidic or basic character
Acidic product = Conjugate acid
Basic product = conjugate base
They have similar chem compos but the c a has proton add and the c b has proton removed
Why has ionisation occured when HCl is added to water
cuz there were no ions before water is added
but once u add water ions are present and can carry a current
Dissociation
find out
Strong Acids
Gets fully ionised in water
Hydrochloric HCl
Sulfuric H₂SO₄
Nitric HNO₃
Weak acids
Gets partially ionised in water - gets a reversible arrow
