Kinetic energy Flashcards
Define Elastic potential energy
Elastic potential energy is stored in the object when work is done on the object to change its shape.
Describe the relationship between Force and Extension in Hooke’s law
The extension of a spring or wire is directly proportional to the Force acting on it.
Define Work Done
When a force causes an object to move through a distance work is done.
Define Gravitational Potential Energy.
Gravitational potential energy is the energy that an object has due to its position in a gravitational field
What is regenerative braking?
A process where a car’s kinetic energy is transferred to electrical energy (KERS) to slow the car down.
What two factors make up the overall stopping distance of a car?
Thinking distance plus braking distance
State three factors that will increase the braking distance of a car.
Speed, worn brakes, worn tyres, poor condition (ice/water) of road
State three factors that will increase the thinking distance of a car.
Speed, tiredness, alcohol, drugs
State the conservation of momentum.
The momentum before the collision will be the same as the momentum after the collision.
Explain how all of the following safety features act to reduce injury: air bag, crumple zone, seatbelt.
Increase the time taken for the object to stop thereby reducing the rate of change of momentum.
Define power
Energy transferred per second.
What is one Watt equal to?
1 joule per second
