Kinematics Flashcards
What are Kinematics?
The study of motion without reference to the forces involved.
What is displacement (s) ?
A specified distance in a specified direction.. It is the vector equivalent of the scalar distance.
What is speed?
The ratio of the distance covered by a moving body in a straight line or curve, to the time taken.
What is velocity?
Defined as the rate of change of a body’s position with respect to time.
What is the name given to the motion of a body travelling in a straight line, covering equal distances in equal time intervals?
Uniform linear motion
What is the equation for uniform velocity?
v = s / t
where (s) is displacement and (t) is time
What is acceleration?
Rate of change of velocity of a body with respect to time.
What is the equation for acceleration?
a = (v-u) / t
where
u is initial velocity
v is velocity
t is time
What is relative velocity ?
Determining the velocity of one moving body with respect to another.
How do you find the relative velocity if the velocities given act in opposite directions?
The velocities are added together.
How do you find the relative velocity if the velocities given act in the same direction?
The difference between the velocities should be calculated.
How do you find the relative velocity if the velocities given act perpendicular to each other ?
Use pythagoras theorem to calculate the relative velocities.
A^2 + B^2 = C^2
A body that travels in equal distances and equal times along a circular path exhibits what, in terms of speed and velocity?
A constant speed but varying velocity.
A body moving uniformly in a circular path is said to be doing what?
Accelerating.
What is Angular Velocity?
The angle swept out in unit time by the radius joining the body to the centre of the circular path.
