Kinematics 1 and 2 Flashcards
Scalar
A physical quantity which has magnitude/size only
Vector
A physical quantity which has both magnitude/size and direction
Distance
Distance is the length of path travelled
Displacement
Displacement is the change in position of a body
Speed
Speed is the rate of change of distance
Velocity
Velocity is the rate of change of displacement
Instantaneous Velocity
The velocity at a particular instant in time, measured over a small time interval.
Acceleration
The rate of change of velocity
Gravitational Force
The earth exerts a gravitational force on all objects that have mass and it is directed towards the centre of the earth
Free Fall
An object is in a state of free fall when the only force acting on it is the gravitational force
Terminal Velocity
This is reached when the magnitudes of the frictional force and gravitational force are equal
Resultant vector
A single vector that has the same effect as the original vectors acting together
