Kidneys water levels Flashcards
1
Q
How does water get absorbed at the kidney
A
65% at the proximal tubule
20% at the loop of henly
15% at the distal tubule and collecting duct (under homeostatic control)
2
Q
What monitors the water in the blood
A
The osmoreceptors (sensor) in the hypothalamus
3
Q
What’s a diuretic? Provide an example
A
Inhibits ADH, promotes the production of urine
Ex. Alcohol inhibits the production of ADH
Ex. Caffeine prevents ADH from binding to the collecting ducts
4
Q
When water is low
A
Osmoreceptors send signal to pituitary gland (integrator)
5
Q
What does the pituitary gland do
A
Releases ADH which increases reabsorption at the distal tubule and allows water to be reabsorbed at the collecting duct
