Kidneys Flashcards
Describe macroscopic renal blood and lymph supply. Innervation?
Renal arteries arise from abdominal aorta at L1-L2 level.
Right renal artery is longer because it crosses behind IVC.
Renal veins drain into IVC (can be more than one on each side).
Left renal vein receives blood from suprarenal glands, diaphragm, body wall and gonads.
Lymph drains into renal and lumbar nodes.
Innervation from aorticorenal plexus, fibers from mesenteric plexus, splanchnic nerves, and special pain fibers that enter spinal cord segments T10-T11.
Describe location and enclosing structures of the kidneys.
Located at L1-L4 level on posterior abdominal wall. Embedded in perirenal fat, and covered by fiberomuscular capsule. Kidney and fat are enclosed by double layer of renal fascia.
