Kidney Ultra-filtration Flashcards
1
Q
Glomerulus structure of basement membrane
A
First layer - endothelium of blood capillary with pores to allow blood plasma to seep out
Second layer : pedocytes which form lining of bowmans capsule
2
Q
Pedocytes cells
A
Projecting fingers that wrap around cappilaries of glomerulus
Tiny slits left between interlocking pedo cells to allow substances to move through
3
Q
Ultra filtration
A
- occurs in renal capsule (bowmans) in nephron
- small molecules filtered out of the blood and pads into lumen of neohonr
- blood in glomerular is separated by the two layers of cells
4
Q
How does ultrafiltration happen
A
- blood flows into glomerulus through affefent arteriole which has WIDER diameter than efferent
- diff in diameter ensures blood in cappilaries on glom maintains higher pressure than pressure in bowmans capsule
- press difference pushed fluid out of glom and into bowmans through pores in pedocytes
5
Q
What is filtered out of blood
A
- water
- amino acid
- glucose
- urea
- inorganic mineral ions
6
Q
What’s left in the cappilaries
A
•blood cells and proteins because they have lower water potential than blood
Low water potential ensures :
•some water stays within the blood
•ensures water is reabsorbed at a later stage
