How does Renal Dialysis work?
A
- Patient’s blood is passed through a membrane surrounded by a dialysis fluid
- Urea + waste products diffuse out
- Glucose, water, ions return to normal concentration.

How often is renal dialysis done?
A
- 2/3 times per week

How long does renal dialysis last?
A
3-5 hours

What are the disadvantages of renal dialysis?
A
- patients feel unwell between treatments
- Expensive + inconvenient

A
- maintains a high concentration gradient
- maximums the removal of water

A
- anti coagulant - keeps blood flowing

How is a Kidney Transplant carried out?
A
- Donor must have same blood type and tissue types as the recipient.
- Otherwise donated kidney would be recognised as foreign
- antigens will be different
- immune system will reject the kidney
- immunosupressant drugs used
