Kidney Structure Flashcards
What is the function of a kidney?
Filters blood, regulates osmolarity and produces urine
What is the specialized structures that filter blood and produce urine?
Nephrons
What happens to glucose in the kidney?
some of the glucose is reabsorbed for metabolic processes
What is the relationship of glucose within the renal vein and artery?
Glucose in the renal vein is lower than the renal artery.
What happens to oxygen in the kidney?
Some of the oxygen is also used in metabolic processes
What is the relationship between oxygen in the renal vein and artery?
Oxygen is lower in the renal vein than in the renal artery
What is the relationship of carbon dioxide in the kidney?
the carbon dioxide is higher in the renal vein than the renal artery
What are the parts of a nephron?
Bowman’s capsule, proximal convoluted tubule, glomerulus, loop of Henle, distal convoluted tubule
What is the Bowman’s capsule?
first part of the nephron where blood is initially filtered (to form filtrate)
What is the proximal convoluted tubule?
folded structure connected to the Bowman’s capsule where selective reabsorption occurs
What is the Loop of Henle?
a selectively permeable loop that descends into the medulla and establishes a salt gradient
What is the distal convoluted tubule?
A folded structure connected to the Loop of Henle where further selective re absorption occurs
