Kidney failure and kidney transplants Flashcards
What happens if one kidney is lost?
The remaining kidney can undertake the work necessary to remove metabolic waste and keep the body healthy.
What is the consequence of losing both kidneys
Loss of both kidneys is fatal if not treated.
How is kidney transplantation performed?
A kidney can be transplanted from a donor into a recipient, but the tissue of both individuals must closely match to avoid rejection by the recipient’s body.
What treatment is necessary for someone suffering from kidney failure?
Regular treatment on a kidney machine, which carries out dialysis, is necessary.
What is dialysis?
Dialysis is a method of separating particles of different sizes in the blood by passing it through a tube with a selectively permeable membrane, surrounded by a dialysis fluid with the same concentration as normal blood.
How does dialysis work?
Substances in excess in the blood, such as urea and salts, diffuse out into the dialysis fluid, ensuring the removal of wastes and preventing the buildup of toxic compounds in the body.
