KIDNEY Flashcards
What is the main structure of the kidneys?
kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra
What is the role of the ureters?
transports urine from the kidney to the bladder
What is the role of the urinary bladder?
temporary storage unit for urine
What is the role of the urethra?
transports urine out of the body
What is the two step process of the nephron?
- glomerular filtration
- tubular reabsorption
What is the Glomerular Filtration Rate?
measures how well the kidneys are filtering waste and indicates any present kidney problems
How is GFR measured?
- creatinine
-inulin
-single shot technique
What are the main functions of the kidney?
- blood filtration - electrolyte balance
- acid base balance - blood pressure
- detoxification
What is the normal GFR?
90-120 ml/min
What is pre renal dysfunction?
the reduction of blood flow to kidneys leading to a decreased GFR
What causes pre renal dysfunction?
hypovolemia and cardiac problems
What is intra renal dysfunction?
direct damage to the nephron
What causes intra renal dysfunction?
tubular or glomerular disorders
What is post renal dysfunction?
obstruction in the urinary tract leading to kidney damage
What causes post renal dysfunction?
kidney stones, blood clots, bladder tumours
What is acute renal failure?
sudden decline in tubular or glomerular function, impeding kidney function
What are the symptoms of acute renal failure?
- decreased urine output
- nausea
- swelling in legs
- fatigue
What results indicate ARF?
- increased creatinine
- blood urea nitrogen
- decreased urine ouput
- decreased GFR
What is the treatment for ARF?
- fluid management for dehydration
-medications - NSAIDS - surgery - kidney stones
What is chronic kidney disease?
progressive condition due to loss of kidney function and tubules lose ability to reabsorb water
What causes CKD?
- diabetes - hypertension
- recurrent kidney infections
- urinary tract obstructions
What are the symptoms of CKD?
- hyper/hypovolemia
- hypertension
- nausea
- nocturia
What are the biomarkers for ARF?
- neutrophil gelatinase- associated lipocain
-IL-18 - Kidney injury molecule
What does the glomerulus do?
filters blood and waste
