Who were the San?
The San were hunter-gatherers.

Towards the interior of the Cape, they moved around freely. They believed that the land belonged to them.

The San lived off the land, hunting wild animals and gathering berries, mushrooms, plant roots and bulbs.

They hunted with arrows coated in poisons obtained from snakes, plants, beetles and scorpions.

They made tools and musical instruments from wood and stone and used animal skins for clothing.

The San left a rich heritage of rock paintings which show us how they lived.
What were the Khoi Khoi’s appearance?
The Khoi-Khoi were quite similar to the San in appearance only a little taller.
What were the Khoi-Khoi?
They were pastoralists, who raised livestock for food.
How and where did the Khoi live?
They lived in more settled groups or clans along the coastal regions of the Cape.
What did the Khoi’s lives revolve around?
Their lives revolved around water, animals and land. They measured their wealth and status in how big their herds of sheep and cattle were.
Who did the Khoi trade with?
The Khoi traded copper and iron with Africans from the North, using it to make tools, weapons and ornaments.
Who were the Khoi in conflict with?
They were often in conflict with the San over land.
Who were the Strandlopers and how did they live?
The Strandlopers were also part of the Khoi-Khoi family but they lived in caves found along the beaches. They lived off fish and shellfish.
What remnants did archaeologists find left from the Strandlopers?
Archaeologists have found mounds of shells in caves, together with animal and stone tools left behind by the Strandlopers as they moved on in the search of food.
Where did the Xhosa come from and where did they settle?
The amaXhosa tribes came from Central Africa and settled in the Eastern Cape.
