Keywords - responses Flashcards
Kinesis
Response in which organism does not move towards or away from stimulus, instead it changes movement speed and rate it changes direction
Taxis
Simple response where the direction is determined by the direction of the stimulus
Tropism
Growth of part of a plant in response to a directional stimulus
Generator potential
Depolarisation of membrane of a receptor cell as a result of a stimulus
Pacinian corpuscle
Receptor cell found in skin that transduces mechanical energy of the stimulus into a generator potential
Receptor
Cell that converts a non-electrical signal eg. light or sound, into an electrical signal
Stretch-mediated sodium channel
Membrane channel whose permeability to Na changes when it is deformed by stretching
Atrioventricular node (AVN)
Part of electrical conduction system in the heart.electrically connects atria and ventricles + causes a delay between their contractions -> allowing time for ventricles to fill w/ blood
Autonomic nervous system
Part of nervous system, controlling muscles + glands, that is not under voluntary control. Consists of sympathetic + parasympathetic nervous system
Chemoreceptor
Receptors found in wall of carotid arteries + aorta. Sensitive to changes in pH of blood that results from changes in CO2 conc
Medulla oblongata
Region of the brain that regulates control of heart rate
Sinoatrial node (SAN)
Area of heart muscle in right atrium that controls + coordinates contraction of the heart. Known as pacemaker
