Life Expectancy
The average period that a person may expect to live
Infant Mortality Rate (IMR)
The amount of children that die before their first birthday (per 1000 live births per year)
Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
The average number of children that would be born to a woman over her lifetime (15-45)
Birth Rate (b/r)
The number of births per 1000 of the population per year
Death Rate (d/r)
The number of deaths per 1000 of the population per year
Replacement Fertility Rate
The amount of children a woman must have to replace the current population. (2.1% in the UK)
Vital Registration
When a baby is born its parents have to register the baby and receive a birth certificate. Deaths must also be registered.
Border Control
Monitors immigration into and emigration out of a country.
Census
Happens every year which ends in a 1 and allows a country to collect information about its population.
Access to safe water
Measured by the number of people who have reasonable means of getting an adequate amount of clean water. Expressed as a %
Access to sanitation
Refers to the share of the population with at least adequate excreta disposal facilities that can effectively prevent contact with excreta. (Insects, Animals, Humans)
Adult Illiteracy Rate
The proportion of the population over 15 who cannot, with understanding, read and write a simple statement about their everyday life and do simple mathematical calculations.
Child Mortality Rate
The probability (%) of dying between the ages of 1 and 5, if subject to current age-specific mortality rates.
Literacy Rate
The proportion of the population who can read and write a simple statement about ones everyday life and do simple mathematical calculations.
Population Growth Rate (Avg Annual)
The increase in a country’s population during one year, divided by the population at the start of the year.
Prevalence of malnutrition under age 5
The percentage of children under 5 whose health and growth are jeopardized by the lack of proper food.
Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)
A method of measuring relative purchasing power of different countries currencies over the same type of goods and services.
Demographic Transition Model
A model which refers to the transition from high birth and deaths rates to low birth and death rates as a country develops.
Old Dependants
People over 65 who rely on the state and the economically active to pay for their care and healthcare
Economically Active
People aged between 16 and 65 who are working and paying taxes to pay for the old and young dependants
Young Dependants
People aged under 15 who rely on the economically active (including their parents and the state) to provide them with food, education and healthcare.
Dependancy Ratio
Shows the relationship between the economically active and non-economically active population.
Migration
A permanent or semi-permanent change of residence of an individual or group of people
Immigration
Movement into a country
