Keywords - biodiversity Flashcards
Species
Group of similar organisms that can breed together to produce fertile offspring
Binomial system
Common system of naming organisms (by Linnaeus) including a generic (genus) name and a specific (species) name
Taxonomy
Theory + practice of biological classification; each group known as a taxon
Phylogeny
Evolutionary relationships between organisms - usually shown by branching trees
Hierarchy
System where groups are contained within larger composite groups + do not overlap
Species diversity
No. of different species and no. of individuals of each species within a community
Diversity index
Way of measuring species diversity, takes into account no. of different species + their relative abundance
Random sampling
Way of preventing sampling bias by eliminating human involvement in choice of samples, usually using a random number generator
Normal distribution
Bell shaped distribution curve, symmetrical about a central value, typical for features showing continuous variation
Standard deviation
Measure of width of a normal distribution curve, indication of range of values either side of the mean
Biodiversity
Number, variety, and variability among organisms
Ecosystem diversity
Range of different habitats within a particular area
