Lingua Franca
A language that is adopted as a common lnaguage between speakers whose native languages are different
Latinate lexis
Having the character of Latin using Latin at a more dominant level
‘Borrowing’ or ‘loan words’
words that are directly borrowed from another language.
‘Affixation’
new prefixes or suffixes are added to existing words. (Usually from Latino or Greek eg anti- meaning against/ opposite. )
Compounding
combining two separate words to create one word (eg hand and bag = handbag)
Archaism
words that have fallen out of common usage (old fashioned)
Obsolete
words which are no longer used/ no longer useful.
