Communicates between the peripheral system and hardware e.g. a printer, it translates so both can understand

Determines the rights users have access to such as reading and opening certain files

Allows user to create new files, delete old ones and modify files

Helps manage system and application software

Scrambles up information so only people with a key can decrypt the code and read it

Reducing number of bits needed to represent data so it’s quicker to send the files and take up less storage
