What is meant by the term growth
An increase in some measured quantity such as height, weight or other dimensions
What is meant by the term development
Complex change that follows an orderly sequence including an increase in skills and abilities
Define milestones
An ability achieved by most children by a certain age
Define gross motor skills
Large movements that involve using the larger muscles in the body e.g rolling over
Define fine motor skills
Smaller movements that involve using smaller muscles e.g picking up a pencil between the finger and thumb
Define palmer grasp
When an object is placed in the infants hand and strokes their palm, the fingers will close and they will grasp it
Define pincer grasp
Using the index finger and thumb or the index finger and middle finger to pick up small objects e.g pick blocks
Define tripod grasp
Using the thumb, index and middle fingers. It is good for gaining good pencil skills and is necessary for fastening buttons on clothes

A period of rapid growth during when young people are able to reproduce and their sexual characteristics develop
