Key words for DNA Flashcards
DNA
deoxyribose nucleic acid
What is a chromosome?
3 points
1) A structure found inside the nucleus of a cell
2) made up of homolugus pairs - one from each parent
3) 23 pairs in the human body (46 all together)
What is a gene?
3 points
1) Section of DNA
2) Codes for a particular characteristic
3) Come in different forms these are called allele
What is an allele?
One or two versions of a gene
What is purine and pyrimidines?
The nitrogen bases that hold the strands of DNA together through hydrogen bonds
adenine and thymine = purine
guanine and cytosine= pyrimidines
What are pentose and hexo sugars?
pentose sugars have 5 carbons = lost an oxygen on second carbon; make up DNA
hexo sugars = make up RNA
What does 5’ and 3’ stand for on a double helix?
5’= 5 prime end - phosphate attached to 5th carbon
3’= phosphate attached to 3rd carbon. O2 pointing downwards
the structure is joined together in an anti parallel structure
