Key words: Explanations and measuring pain Flashcards
1
Q
What is pain?
A
- Subjective unpleasant (sensory/ physical) experiences
associated with actual or threatened tissue damage/ irritation
2
Q
What is acute pain?
A
- A type of pain
- Which can be severe.
- Develops quicky and lasts a relatively short period of time.
- Usually in a specific location/ identifiable source.
3
Q
What is chronic pain?
A
- A type of pain
- Which lasts a long period of time.
- Treatment resistant.
- Occurs along with a chronic health condition
result of long term behavioural factors such as physical exertion or chronic illness
4
Q
Musculoskeletal system
A
Refers to the
* Bones
* Muscles
* Tendons
* Ligaments
5
Q
What is Phantom Limb Pain? PLP
A
- A type of pain
- Common in amputees
- Occurs even in the absence of the limb, as the person still experiences pain from that area
- Hard to treat
6
Q
Mirror treatment
A
- Treatment for PLP. It involves:
1. Placing the remaining limb into a box with a mirror placed down the middle.
2. Creates the illusion that the limb is still there
3. Patients then perform a range of exercises which may lead to a reduction in PLP
7
Q
Specificity theory
A
- A theory that proposes that
1. Specialised pain receptors respond to stimuli via nerve impulses,
2. These NI send signals to the brain.
3. The brain then processes the signals as a pain sensation,
4. Brain responds with a motor response to try stop the pain
8
Q
Gate control theory
A
- A theory that proposes that
- The dorsal horn (in the spinal cord) contains a gate that either prevents or allows pain signals from entering the brain.
9
Q
The Gate control theory explains..
A
why our emotional state or expectations affect pain perception.
10
Q
Dorsal horn
A
- The area of the spinal cord (where the gating mechanism occurs)
11
Q
The Dorsal Horn recieves…
A
- Info from small nerve fibres (pain)
- large nerve fibres (touch)
- and sends this info to the brain.
