Key words Flashcards
Asthma
condition which causes shortness of breath and coughing; affects adults and children. Caused by inflammation of bronchi tubes which carry air in and out of lungs
Bronchi
left and right bronchi carry air to lungs. air travels from mouth/nose to larynx then trachea which takes it to bronchi
Bronchioles
Bronchi branch out into smaller passageways to lungs. At the end there are air sacs called alveoli
Cystic Fibrosis
genetic condition causes lungs and digestive system to become clogged with mucus; causes difficulty breathing and digesting food
larynx
voice box made up of cartilage; connects pharynx to trachea. consists of three parts; supraglottis, glottis and subglottis. main functions=protect trachea whilst swallowing, enable air to reach lungs, enable sounds to be produced
Peak flow
amount of and rate which air is breathed in/out during respiration process
spirometre
test that measures how well lungs work by measuring how much air is inhaled/exhaled
trachea
windpipe, connects mouth and nose to lungs. air passes through trachea when inhaled/exhaled
