Literacy Rate
Proportion of the population over 15 who can read.
Human Development Index
Describes human development based on 3 factors: life expectancy, GDP per capita and literacy.
Life expectancy at birth
The average number of years a newborn is likely to live if prevailing patterns of age specific mortality rates at the time of birth were to stay the same throughout the child’s life.
GDP
The total value of goods and services produced by a country during a year, usually divided by the number of people.
GNI
Like GDP but includes overseas investment from organisations and residents such as shares and profits from overseas manufacturing.
Purchasing Power Parity
Shows what per capita income will purchase when the cost of living is taken into account.
Human Poverty Index
Focuses on what needs to be provided for a good standard of living; health care, safe water and food show variations in quality of life.
Gender Related Development Index
Shows inequalities between men and women in terms of life expectancy, education and income.
Gender Empowerment Measure
An index measuring gender inequality in 3 basic dimensions: economic participation, decision making and political participation.
