KEY WORDS! Flashcards
What is a group in the periodic table?
A group of elements have similar chemical properties. They are the vertical columns. They are grouped like this because they have the same amount of outer electrons
What are periods on the periodic table?
Elements atomic number tells you which period it is. Periods are horizontal rows
What elements are metals and where on the periodic table are they?
All elements to the LEFT of aluminium, germanium, antimony and polonium
What elements are NON METAL and where on the periodic table are they?
Hydrogen, boron, silicon, arsenic, tellurium, astatine and all elements to the RIGHT of them are Non-metals
What is an Atom?
It is a basic building block of matter that is VERY small. Everything is made out of it. It is the smallest substance.
What is an element?
An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into any other substance and every element is made out of only ONE type of atom. Eg. Oxygen, hydrogen, helium.
What is a molecule?
A molecule is two or more atoms that are chemically joined together. They are all made of one type of particle but each particle is made of two or more atoms. Water is a molecule made out of 2 hydrogen and one oxygen.
What is a particle?
A particle is a general term for a tiny part of matter. It can be an atom or a molecules.
What is a compound?
Two or more DIFFERENT atoms chemically bonded together. It contains two or more elements. Eg: Carbon Dioxide (carbon, 2 oxygen)
What is a mixture?
A mixture is two or more different substances NOT chemically bonded together. It isn’t pure.
What is a substance
Substances are made out of atoms. It can be made out of a single atom or multiple atoms in small groups called Molecules
