Tawhid
‘Oneness’
The oneness of Allah, he is the only God and nothing can be compared to him.
Rasalah
‘Prophethood’
The messengers of God, sent his word through revelations. Beginning with Adam and ending with Muhammad.
Greater Jihad
‘To strive or struggle’
The inner struggle to live as a muslim, following the moral and religious rules set out by Allah.
Lesser Jihad
‘To strive or struggle’
The physical struggle or ‘holy war’ in defence of Islam.
Shariah
‘The straight path’
A way of life, set out by Allah for muslims to follow. Shariah law is the set out moral and religious principles set out by the Quran.
Ummah
‘Community’
The world wide community of muslims who share common religious identity.
Shi’a Muslims
After the death of Muhammad, they followed Ali, his cousin. they believe that their leader should be a descendant of Muhammad. They make up around 5% of the Muslim community worldwide.
Sunni Muslims
After the death of Muhammad, they followed his close friend Abu Bakr, who was elected as the Caliph. Sunni Muslims take up around 95% of the worldwide muslim community.
Shirk
The worship of something other than Allah. e.g Idolatry- the worship of idols
