key terms test 2 Flashcards
define behavioural categories
when conducting structured observations, psychologists have to decide which specific behaviours should be examined. they need to operationalise the behaviour through the use of behavioural categories. involves breaking the target behaviour into components that can be observed and measured
define coding (content analysis)
when the researcher places qualitative data into categories
define counterbalancing
technique used to deal with order effects when using a repeated measures design. p sample divided in half, one half completing two conditions in one order and the other half completing the conditions in the reverse order
define experimental design
describes the way participants are allocated to experimental groups. repeated measures, independent groups, matched pairs
define type 1 error
a false positive. where you accept the alternative/experimental hypothesis when it is false (you believe the building is on fire and run outside but it is not)
define type 2 error
false negative. you accept the null hypothesis when it is false (you think the building is not on fire but it is burning)
