Define State
“Legitimate monopoly on violence in a given territory”- not just government but parliament, courts etc.
Define nation state
a sovereign state of which most of the citizens or subjects are united also by factors which define a nation, “We the people”
Define democratic
A system of government in which power is vested in the people, who rule either directly or through freely elected representatives
Define liberal/ liberalism
- Liberal: different things in different contexts
o Liberalism: political ideology focus on freedom + rights
Define legitimate
the right and accepted authority
Define sovereignty
supreme power/authority
Define freedom vs rights
o Freedom as being more inherently political.
o Rights are attributes that adhere to individuals;
♣ Freedom (or the lack thereof) is a characteristic of the political system that guarantees those rights
♣ E.g. right to free speech, but freedom of speech ‘protects’ this right
