Key terms Ch.4 Flashcards
Situated at or directed toward the front of body or object; opposite of posterior
Anterior
Area on which an object rests and that provides support for the object
Base of support (BOS)
Center of gravity (COG)
point at which mass of body or object is centered
Relates to group of muscles bounded by the abdominal wall, pelvis, diaphram, and the lower back that are contracted to assist in posture, balance, and stability
Core Stabilization
Dysfunction
disturbance, impairment, or abnormality of the functioning of a body part
Friction
Act of rubbing one object against another
Gravity
force that pulls toward the center of the earth and affects all objects
Remaining or pertaining to the same length
Isometric
Kyphosis
Abnormal increase of convexity in the curvature of the thoracic spine as viewed laterally
Lateral
pertaining to the side; away from the midline of the body or structure
A component of a mechanical lever; may be the force arm or the weight (resistance) arm; when length of arm is increased or length of weight arm is decreased, a greater mechanical advantage is created for the lever system
Lever arm
Lordorsis
Increase in one of the forward convexities of the normal vertebral columns; can occur in lumbar or cervical
Lumbar
lower region of the back
Medial
situated towards the midline of the body or structure
Movement of pelvis so the anterior superior iliac spine moves anteriorly or posteriorly to produce an anterior or posterior tilt or inclination of the pelvis
Pelvic tilt (inclination)
Posterior
towards the back of a body or object; opposite of anterior
Recumbent
lying down
Anteroposterior plane or body section that is parallel to the median plane of the body
Sagittal plane
Squat
to sit on the heels with knees fully bent
Stoop
to bend the body forward or downward by partially bending the knees
Expression of the effectiveness of a force in turning a lever system; the product of a force multiplied by the perpendicular distance from its line of action to the axis of motion (T=FxD)
Torque
Valsalva meneuvar (Phenomenon)
increased intrathoracic pressure cause by forcible exhalation against a closed glottis
A quantity possessing magnitude and direction, such as a force or velocity
Vector
Vertical gravity line (VGL)
an imaginary line that passes through the center of gravity of an object.
