Key terms Flashcards
Ecosystem
An ecosystem represents the interactions between living and non-living components in a particular area
Biome
Area with plants and animals which have similar attributes for the environment they are in.
Habitat
A habitat is where a particular organism lives (i.e. rabbits habitat is grassland)
Population
a group of individuals from the same species found in the same area.
Community
a community is a group of interacting populations (i.e. foxes and rabbits form a grassland community)
Abiotic
Non-living aspects of an ecosystem that shapes the environment (i.e. in terrestrial environment these may be winds, temperatures, soils etc)
Biotic
These are the living aspects in an ecosystem that shapes in the environment (i.e. fish and aquatic plants in a pond ecosystem)
Niche
Every species has a specialised role, based around the conditions they endure (i.e. in woodland, trees will tolerate different conditions than an owl)
Biodiversity
The variety of life. This can be studies on a variety of scales, from a pond ecosystem to the entire world.
Keystone species
These are the species that are vital to how an ecosystem works, without them the ecosystem would be completely different or cease to exist. (i.e. mountain lions controlling population of deer and rabbits)
