Carbon cycle Flashcards
Describe biogeochemical cycling
the natural course of how living things circulate with consideration of the biological, chemical and geological factors
Step one
First enters atmosphere as carbon dioxide through respiration and combustion. Carbon dioxide is then absorbed by producers (i.e shrubs and trees) to make carbohydrates in photosynthesis.
Step two
Food chain passes through carbon compounds as animals feed on plants, Most of the carbon consumed is exhaled as carbon dioxide, which is formed during respiration.
Step 3
Animals and plants die - dead organisms eaten by decomposers (i.e. earthworms)- the carbon in their bodies replenished into atmosphere as CO2- the plant/animal remains may be available for combustion as fossil fuels in the future.
