Explain the meaning of the term ‘biodegradable polymer’.
Biodegradable plastics are plastics that degrade/break down in the soil by the action of living organisms usually bacteria/sunlight/water/oxygen (= 2 marks)
Describe the advantages of flat pack furniture over ready assembled furniture
- Can be assembled with basic tools which are often supplied so the customer needs few skills.
- Customer can attain a sense of achievement from building their own furniture.
- Can be disassembled easily so can easily be packed when moving home.
- Flat pack boxes takes up less room in a delivery truck than ready assembled so the manufacturer can transport more in one trip.
What do the letters FSC stand for?
Forest Stewardship Council
Why is the symbol FSC used?
- It is used to show that a timber product has come from a sustainable source.
- It is used because FSC symbol is a global forest certification so the customer knows the wood is from a sustainable source.
- It is used to show that FSC ensures forests are properly managed e.g. trees are replanted when cut down.
What is meant by the term ‘smart material’?
A material that changes its physical properties in response to an input

Describe the advantages of using man-made boards compared to natural woods
Consistent thickness throughout the board.
No grain problems.
Available in large sheet sizes unlike solid timber.
Not prone to defects such as warping, bowing etc.
Less expensive than solid timber of a similar size. Utilises the entire tree therefore more environmentally friendly.
