What is discrimination?
When someone is treated unfairly or unequally because of who they are or experience prejudice that has been put into practice
What is empowerment?
Giving individuals information and support so they can take informed decisions and make choices about their lives in order to live as independently as possible
What are rights?
Rights are entitlements that everyone should receive. People’s rights are protected by the laws of the UK such as the Human Rights Act 1998 and the Equality Act 2010

What is confidentiality?
Restricting access to information about a service user to individuals who are involved in their care, unless permission to disclose the information is given by the service user
What is safeguarding?
Maintaining service-user confidentiality is part of safeguarding practice, so that the clients are protected from harm and abuse and their health and wellbeing is promoted
What is a regulation?
A regulation is a law which sets the standard of professional conduct required of people who work in health and social care settings.
Regulations are mandatory. This means that they must be followed by law
What is a holistic approach?
Takes into account of a person’s wider needs (physical, intellectual, emotional and social) and seeks to meet these needs to promoted health and wellbeing

What is advocacy?
Service users, their carers and other advocates should be involved in decision-making and planning support with service providers, working in partnership
What is whistleblowing?
Whistleblowing can take place in both social care and health settings. In a health setting, for example a member of staff might raise concerns about patient care, such as when the health and safety of patients is that at risk. The concerns are reported to relevant staff in the hospital, such as senior nurse, a doctor or one of the hospital managers.
Whistleblowers are protected by law and should not be treated unfairly or lose their job

Health and social care organisations often work together to provide services which people need
What is primary care?
Primary healthcare provide the first point of contact, such as a GP, who gives access to-day-to day services for patients and refers them to relevant specialist where needed
What is a code of practice?
It is a set of guidelines, sometimes based on legal regulations, which explains the way members of occupations have to behave
What is a procedure?
Step-by-step instructions that employees must followed. completing a particular task to the standard required by an organisation
What is a policy?
A service providers statement of intent followed by a description of procedures to be followed to ensure that codes of practice and regulations are adhered to
What are guidelines?
Advice form regulatory bodies about how to follow codes of practice in the workplace
