Phratry
A brotherhood.
Days after the child is born, it is introduced to the phratry.
This is used in Extract 86 to show that his mother is the legitimate daughter of Ciron.
Moicheia
Adultery.
Unauthorised sex with Athenian woman under guardianship of another Kyrios (& not a prostitute). Men were limited to relations with wife, concubine, prostitutes and slaves. If you’re caught you could be killed on the spot, have to pay money or bodily humiliations.
Epiklerate
The system of Inheritance.
A man would equally share his property between his son which would secure the oikos. If he had daughters, the property would go to the daughter. If no sons at all in family, it would go to Anchisteia.
Anchisteia
Group of close relations.
If man had no sons in family, his property was passed on to the Anchisteia. However, his oikos would die out and this was a route people wished to avoid.
Thesmophoria
Festival
Celebrated in honour of Demeter, goddess of corn and cultivation. It was limited to the wives of Athenian citizens and lasted 3 days.
Heiros gamos
Sacred marriage.
Between a God and a Goddess. He would get her power.
Oikos
Lord/master (male guardian of a woman).
The Kyrios chooses the husband of the woman.
Proix
Prize- the dowry.
The proix is the 3rd (and last) part of the wedding day ritual.
Gamos
Marriage.
This is the first part of the wedding day ritual.
Engue
Pre-wedding ceremonies.
This is the second part of the wedding day ritual.
Maia
Midwife.
The midwife would deliver the baby (men would not be present). Then, they would take care of the mother and baby for a few days and expose the baby.
Exposure
The midwife would expose the baby to the father and if he accepted it it would live, if not it would die.
Andron
Man’s room.
In extract 88, Euphiletus moves the Andron and Gynaikon around to make it easier for his wife to care for the child.
Gynaikon
Woman’s room.
In Extract 88, Euphiletus moves the Andon and Gynaikon around which makes it easier for the wife to cheat on him.
