Extract 86- Proof of Marriage- Law Court Case
The speaker is trying to prove that his mother is the legitimate daghter of Ciron so that he can claim his father’s inheritance. His evidence is that he was accepted into the Phatry.
Extract 88- Husband’s Defence- Law Court Case
The husband admitted to killing his wife’s lover. Eupiletus is trying to show that what he did was lawful.
When Euphiletus’ wife died, he and his wife went to the funeral. She was spotted by Eratosthenes and Euphiletus was warned about Eratosthenes and his history by an old hag. So, he fathered a crowd, found them sleeping together, then killed Eratosthenes using Defence of Solon’s law, which said that he could legally kill Eratosthenes.
Extract 89- The case for the prosecution in a poisoning trial- Law Court Case
The Prosecutor is trying to accuse his stepmother of poisoning his father. His stepmothers sons are defending her. He is asking for justice, since although she did not physically kill his dad, it was her idea.
He claims that she befriended his dad’s friend’s concubine, persuaded her to add a ‘love potion’ to their meal to make him love her more. She added more to Philoneus, and he died instantly. The prosecutors father died a few weeks later. The concubine was arrested and executed without trial because she was not a citizen.
Extract 90- Neaera- Law Court Case
Apollodorus is prosecuting Neaera on the grounds that she has been living with Stephanus as if she were his legal wife when in fact she is a foreign prostitute.
Apollodorus has been using Neara has a pawn to get revenge on Stephanus as part of an ongoing feud. The two key things that Apollodorus is trying to demonstrate about Neaera are that she is a foreigner, and she is trying to live with Stephanus as his legal wife.
Extract 267- How to train a wife- Dialogue
Xenophon imagines Socrates talking about estate management with a man called Ischomachus, who in this conversation explains to Socrates how he trained his wife.
He states that he and his wife have a relationship in which they create a working and productive household. He respects his wife and understands the importance of the woman to the household. Ischomachus compares his wife to the leader bee, and states that he does not think his wife should wear makeup since it is deceitful. He thinks that his wife would be beautiful by keeping an eye on those working for him, and making sure that everything is in the right place.
