horizontal integration
occurs when a company acquires or merges with another company in the same industry that is operating at the same level in the value chain. Companies may pursue horizontal integration to grow their existing business or prevent a competitor from gaining market share.
vertical integration
involves the acquisition of a key component of a company’s supply chain, either upstream or downstream from its own core competency. Companies pursue vertical integration for a number of reasons, including increased control, reduced costs or improved margins.
conglomerate
a company that owns numerous companies involved in mass media enterprises- composed of a number of companies (subsidiaries) engaged in generally unrelated businesses e.g Disney
distribution
process of making media content available to audiences through various channels and platforms. Will depend upon the product e.g. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures distributed BP (organised release of film as well as promotion) and Ubisoft distributed AC
circulation
The distribution/dissemination of media products to audiences/users. method will depend on media form e.g. circulation of print mags, broadcast of TV programmes
independent film
A film made outside of financial and artistic control of a large mainstream film company. will be privately conceived and funded (not many actually are). however, more commonly refers to a film that is made by a smaller company on a low budget e.g. IDB
Public service broadcast (PSB)
a radio and tv broadcaster that is financed by public money e.g. license fee in the UK (BBC Iplayer) and is seen to offer a public service by catering for a range of audiences by providing information and entertainment
synergy
The combination of elements to maximise profits within a media organisation or product. e.g. a film soundtrack sells the film and sells the soundtrack
Hermeneutic code
Any element of the narrative that is not fully explained and hence becomes a mystery to the audience- enigma
Proairetic code
Other major structuring principles that build interest or suspense. also builds tension, referring to any other action or event that indicates something else is going to happen- implies a further narrative action
paradigmatic features
signs are defined by groups. signifies a model, patter, or example that serves as a standard or reference point. it represents a theoretical framework or conceptual system that guides our understanding and interpretation of phenomena
