Primary Socialisation
Learning socially accepted behaviour and culture of society in the family
Expressive Role
Women’s role- providing warmth, comfort, nurturing, and emotional support
Instrumental Role
Men’s role- breadwinner role
Sexual Division of Labour
The way jobs are divided into ‘men’s jobs’ and ‘women’s jobs’
Classic Extended Family
Several related nuclear families of family members living in the same house, street, or area
Privatised Nuclear Family
A self-contained and self-reliant nuclear family. Free time is mainly spent together as a family. Separate from the extended family.
Modified Extended Family
Not living geographically close to your extended family but remaining in regular contact with them.
Geographical Mobility
The ability to move around the country.
Social Moblility
The ability to move up and down the class system
Meritocracy
A society in which individuals achieve on the basis of their own talents and abilities, rather than based on who you know or the family you were born into
Dependency Culture
A way of life that involves dependence on others, particularly benefits from the welfare system
Underclass
Social group at the bottom of the class system, excluded from the rest of society
Monogamy
Having one partner at a time
Ideological State Apparatus
Institutions which spread ruling class ideology
Symmetrical Family
A family in which husband and wife or partners have roles that have become more equal/alike
